Piety Hill Musings

The ramblings of the Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church of Detroit. Piety Hill refers to the old name for our neighborhood. The neighborhood has changed a great deal in the over 160 years we have been on this corner (but not our traditional biblical theology) and it is now known for the neighboring theatres, the professional baseball and football stadiums and new hockey/basketball arena.

Tragic Shooting in a church in Knoxville...and a question.

It appears the shooter had no connection to the Church. Neighbors are giving the standard "nice guy", "paid the rent on time", "didn't seem like the type to shoot in a church"....

One of the local TV stations filed this report this morning. http://www.wbir.com/

11:00 am
Multiple people have suffered gunshot wounds in what witnesses describe as a mass shooting inside a church in West Knoxville Sunday morning.
The shootings happened at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Kingston Pike.
A witness who spoke to 10 News said police had arrived and one person was being detained at the scene.
A children's production of "Annie" was taking place as part of the normal Sunday service
(emphasis mine) at the time of the shooting, the witness, who is a member of the church, said. The gunman walked into a packed sanctuary and opened fire.

Please pray for these folks as they deal with this tragedy. It will be interesting to hear the coverage in the coming days to hear a possible motive.

But my question - "Annie" as a part of the normal Sunday service?
Is this where worship goes in a denomination like the Unitarians - that have no doctrine?
Is "The sun will come out tomorrow" or "Its a hard knock life" a part of their teaching?
I am sure the kids were cute and worked hard on the production - but is this Sunday Morning Worship? I don't get it.....
