Piety Hill Musings

The ramblings of the Rector of St. John's Church in the city of Detroit. Piety Hill refers to the old name for our neighborhood. The neighborhood has changed a great deal in the over 165 years we have been on this corner (but not our traditional biblical theology) and it is now known for the neighboring theatres, the professional baseball and football stadiums and new hockey/basketball arena.

A nice weekend

Friday (the day off) I went with the boys to rowing. They are really coming along! It was great to see, and also to spend time with another dad there - Todd Platt, who was married at St. John's and a frequent visitor. His daughter is in the rowing class. Todd rowed for the Detroit Boat Club in the late 70's/early 80's. Great hearing about the DBC in those days, and getting to know Todd.
Video of the boys rowing can be found here

Then on Friday and Saturday afternoon we had an air show over our house. For the Gold Cup races on the Detroit River there was a fighter jet demo Friday and Saturday with a jet flying a few hundred feet over out house.
Video can also be seen of that at the above address.

But overall, it was a great time being with family, paying hardly any attention to what is going on at General Convention, and getting ready for the St. Michael's Conference this upcoming week.

Catching up on baseball AND rowing

It has been a busy spring because of Little League Baseball!

I was elected to the board of our local little league, and in charge of the concession stand. This has kept Jennifer and I busy, particularly in the beginning Jennifer did lots of planning and organizing. Since then I have done most of the shopping - they have gotten to know me pretty well at Sam's Club and Dearborn Meats!

Sam and Andrew's team had an aweful year. We only won 3 games out of 18, including three play-off losses. In addition to this, despite Andrew having a team leading batting average and on base percentage he wasn't always an every inning player, didn't get to pitch except once in the second to last game, and never caught in a game (he caught in every game, most innings, last year). We did have other good catchers on the team. 5 kids on the team, all with lower batting averages and on-base percentages made the tournament teams in the 10, 11, and 12 year old groups but Andrew did not. I am really annoyed by this and will have to consider whether Andrew should bother to play little league at all next year. He perhaps should just play Fed Ball.
Sam got to pitch quite a bit, mostly as a finisher, and developed a wicked curve ball that had kids reaching out and swinging at air! At the beginning of the year Sam was talking about this being his last year playing baseball since it is the last year, age-wise, he can play little league. But he was greatly encouraged by the assistant coach Dave Feys in his pitching and is considering playing again next year.
Here is a video of Sam pitching this year

And Andrew playing third base

I didn't get a chance to video tape them much because I was the scorekeeper for the team.

William's team is having a GREAT run! They are in game three of the Double A local little league world series, having split the first two games. William's bat was ice cold all season, but when the play offs started so did his bat! He averages 2 or more hits a game since then, and for multiple bases too. And he has been pitching as well. And of course, winning is fun!
Here is William hitting

Sam and Andrew have started rowing. They are taking a class on learning to row at the Detroit Boat Club's crew team. The DBC proper has been closed a long time, but the rowing team continues to use the crumbling building. This is very exciting for me since I was a rower in high school and college. They are really enjoying it.
The question is, will they be as interested in the Spring when practices are at 5:30am???

So that catches us up on the boys - baseball and rowing.
Now off to do some hospital calling....

Andrew's dream (car)

We saw this today in the parking lot at the hardware store.

It is Andrew's dream car.

He better get that MLB contract if he wants one of these.

Personally, I would be afraid to drive it, and would be like the owner of this car who parked it very far away from the store so no one would park near it!

a crumby sports day today

Our baseball practice cancelled due to snow (where is the global warming when you need it?).
Tiger's opener (away) and they get slapped around 12 to 5.
And MSU loses in the National Championship game.

Big day today for Sam and Andrew!!!

Later today, Friday, Sam and Andrew have their formal Black Belt test. This is after their 5 hour tests a few weeks ago.

Instructor Santi believes they are ready (she wouldn't let them test otherwise), but there will be black belt instructors from other clubs to prove themselves to!

Sam tests at 4:30pm. Andrew tests about 5:10 or so. Sam is first, Andrew third (of 6 testing).

Then at 7pm is the Club demonstration night, where they will be awarded their black belts (D.v.).

This is the culmination of 4.5 years of work by the boys.
Sam is 12, Andrew 11. Andrew will be one of the youngest ever to make it in this club, along with the Instructor's daughter a few years ago, and another boy last year.

William is about a year away from his black belt. He will be 9 if he does!

If you would like to come, it is at Windmill Pointe Park in Grosse Pointe Park.

Drafted by....The Tigers!

No, not those Tigers....

Grosse Pointe Park Little League Tigers

Sam and Andrew were drafted by Manager Matt Reno for the Major League (Little League) team.

Sure will be nice to not have to buy team apparrel to help coach (in 4 years I have coached teams named the Cubs, Astros, Giants, and Reds and have the hats to prove it), since I already have Detroit Tiger stuff!

Practice starts in April!

Good to be back!

I like being away on vacation, but it is always good to be back.

On our drive back, we were greeted with the sad news that Sharon Schafer had passed away very unexpectedly Sunday morning. Her funeral at St. John's is thursday morning.

Where were we?

Back from the west

Our trip out to the southwestern corner of Michigan was a bust, as far as rockets went.

When we got there on Friday, which was experimental motor/rocket day, they hadn't even bothered to set up the launch equipment. The ceiling (cloud cover) was far too low and therefore too dangerous to be sending up rockets. And it was raining.

On Saturday Sam and I got out there about 15 minutes before the scheduled start, but we knew things weren't promising. It was raining on the drive there, and although the ceiling was higher, the wind was kicking up and the forecast was for 15 to 20 mph winds with gusts to 30 - far to high to launch anything with any power!

When we arrived there were a dozen or so people deciding what to do. The place where the launch is usually set up in the farmers field was a bad position because the wind was blowing from the north. This means any rockets set off would blow back over us and into the tree area. So a decision was made to move up the road a bit- which gave us some more recovery room. The team set up one 'low power' (motors A through D - basically estes type kit rocket motors) and one mid-range rack.
Sam set off two low level rockets (A 'snitch' and a 'pizza' rocket), the first two of the day. He also tried to get up a slightly larger rocket on a low motor, but there was a problem with the motor.
In this two hour period we spent more time in our car because of passing rain showers, and even two bouts of hail! As we went along the wind was getting worse and worse.

We gave up at noon. Only 4 or 5 rockets, all little ones, had been set off in those two hours. Jennifer's mother and foster daughter came up to watch the launch, as did the entire rest of the immediate family. They never even came out to the flight field (too cold and windy).

But the trip was not an entire bust. We had a good time seeing Jennifer's parents (her dad came up Friday PM), going out to dinner with them, and swimming in the pool in the hotel (Friday and Saturday). We also got to visit Red Arrow Hobbies, near our hotel. The owner of Red Arrow, Dave, comes out to the Jackson Launches as a vendor, and we appreciate his wares and his company. In fact the only time we saw people from our Jackson Club was at Red Arrow! Sam was able to stock up for future launches.

For Sam it was a big disappointment, but he had a pretty good attitude about it all - nothing he could do about it!

I have a highlight video I have to download to my computer, and upload to Youtube. When I do, I will let you know. It is probably only 3 minutes long (not alot of highlights this launch).

Childhood memory

John Rogers / Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- Larry Harmon, who appeared as Bozo the Clown for decades and licensed the name to other Bozos around the world, had died at age 83.
Harmon died Thursday at his home of congestive heart failure, his longtime publicist, Jerry Digney, told The Associated Press.
Although not the first person to play Bozo, Harmon took on the famous clown's persona and, as an entrepreneur, he licensed the character to others, particularly TV stations. Those stations then recruited their own Bozos for local shows.

Harmon met his alter ego after answering a casting call to make personal appearances as a clown to promote records. He got the job and eventually bought the rights to Bozo.
Along the way, he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume.

Found before we knew it was gone

Today a Police Detective knocked on our front door, to let us know that they had recovered Andrew's stolen bike. We didn't know it was gone.

The garage door had been opened unattended for 10 minutes or so in the late afternoon yesterday. William noticed that Sam's bike was on the lawn, odd since it has a flat tire and Sam hadn't rode for a while.

I guess they must have grabbed his first, and finding it flat, took Andrew's.

Another neighbor also had their bike stolen and reported it to the police. When the police apprehended that suspect, one of the three accomplices turned evidence, and after a search of a house turned up several stolen bikes, the one who fessed up showed the police which house(s) it was stolen from!

Andrew picked it up at the police station today - with a new Grosse Pointe Park ID sticker on it (his was the newest and only one without the sticker). The suspects were over 17 and are under arrest.

Good police work GPP Public Safety!

Getting to The List

Last week I took Weds and Thursday off (in addition to my Friday and Saturday) to get around to that list of things we have been doing around the house.

And we accomplished all of it!

Took down shutters, repaired, painted, re-installed (I am always nervous on the roof)

Old color - pale blue, new color - black (see photos)

Painted front door, put on new locks (black instead of brass), painted mail slot hardware.

Old color - pale blue, new color - red (see photo)

Painted side door in garage.

Put new lighting up on outside of garage and side door.

Replaced wiggling socket in boys room.

Cut grass

Edged

Weeded

Trimmed hedges (we have lots)

Cleaned gutters (YUCK).
This in addition to baseball games, regular inside chores, etc.
It sure is nice to have this sense of accomplishment!

a Glorious Spring Saturday!

What a nice day today.

Jennifer is out of town with Meg at the La Leche League of Michigan Conference and they are on their way back as I type.

Last night the boys participated in their Karate club's demonstration night. Sam helped a black belt with his formal testing, Andrew introduced a section, and William and another boy led a group of little kids in an exercise routine. 4 kids were awarded their black belts last night, and my boys were invited to the afterparty. 11pm is really late for 11, 10 and 7 year olds, even if they are hyped up on sugar!

Today was a gorgeous weather day. The boys had their baseball team photos taken (Sam and Drew in the AM, William in the afternoon). It was nice to see other players and parents from last year, and see who is playing on which team and with whom. Both teams also had practices today, and for first practices things went pretty well. I am helping to coach both Sam and Andrew's Triple A team, and William's Single A team.

In between pictures and practices I re-wired with grounded plugs all the sockets in the basement, and gave the house a thorough weekend cleaning (vacuum, mop, wipe down counters/appliances - I finished the last bathroom about and hour ago). The boys played outside most of the day - catch, wave-board, bikes, etc. I also did the meals and yes, we had vegetables!

The boys put their heads on the pillow at 9:15 and were all asleep by 9:30.

I can tell I am going to need an advil - lots of stretching and bending for both housework and baseball.

But a glorious day all the way around!
